About The Work
The spoken word has never been my native language. I communicate in the visual. Each image brings a voice where words could not describe my own journey. Magazine imagery is ready clip-art, snipped out of context, manipulated and built to form new meaning. I choose images subconsciously and let my instinct direct the structure. It is a process of deep-rooted discovery. Without words, I can decide what to express, what to keep silent, set a tone, add nuance. Sometimes the recipient leaves with more questions than answers. Clarity is not my intention. Like listening to a song in a foreign tongue, the beauty of the song can be enjoyed nonetheless. The outcome is mysterious.
My process is simple: paper, Xacto-knife, scissors and glue. I usually cut from vintage magazines. The collage process derives from my need to organize and categorize. Much time is spent placing images together. Some are kept for years until they find purpose. It is similar to building a jigsaw puzzle, but I don’t know the final outcome. Images are cut out, spread across multiple tables, moved around and laid next to each other, until there is a fit. This year, I am creating photomontage maquettes for future paintings and drawings.
